Myoshinji Temple: Characters - Kanzan

關山字號 宗峰妙超

宗峰妙超四十八歲時所書。師曾參雲門關公案而證悟，弟子慧玄復問雲門公案事。師問：「如何是宗門向上事？」慧玄答：「關」。宗峰妙超遂欣然為慧玄題寫「關山」字號，並書一偈贈之。一九五二年指定為日本國寶。
此幅形式為上書「關山」二大字，下書小字偈語、題識。「關山」二字並無多樣的書寫技巧，字形四方座立，呈現一種穩定直截的氣質；小字書寫與結字則稍快速隨意，與大字的穩定形成對比，豐富了此作的美感；加上偈語的思想承載，作品更具可品味低迴的內涵。
宗峰妙超俗姓紀，名妙超，號宗峰，為日本臨濟宗僧，參學於南浦紹明，受印可而嗣其法。花園天皇（1308～1318在位）及後醍醐天皇（1318～1339在位）皈依之，諡號興禪大燈國師、高照正燈國師。
