Mathura: Bodhisattva in Contemplation

思惟菩薩半跏像
印度北方邦秣菟羅出土
印度北方邦秣菟羅（Mathura, Uttar Pradesh）出土。菩薩呈半跏姿勢，右足置左膝上，左足履犍陀羅式繩鞋，顯然在美術上有受到犍陀羅影響。頭飾為印度本土的頭巾，前立一較大的圓形裝飾，正面置一尊手結禪定印的阿彌陀化佛；頭巾側面刻飾似金翅鳥。菩薩眉毛彎曲，雙目略微上挑。通身裝飾富麗豪華，佩大耳璫、臂釧及五重腕釧，胸前掛重重珠串，垂成「V」形；殘留的背光可見盛開的蓮花裝飾紋樣。依以上種種造像特徵判斷，應為貴霜王朝（約1〜3世紀）後期約二世紀下半葉至三世紀上半葉的作品。
以單體的思惟菩薩造像而言，犍陀羅遺品約有二十尊，秣菟羅則僅有數尊，且除此尊外，餘者皆為斷片和小像。
