此白描菩薩像為日本奈良東大寺正倉院的寶物之一，為奈良時代（710～794）少數佛畫之珍品。由二幅麻布上下黏接而成，畫面略呈方形。
菩薩頭微俯，雙手結印，乘坐祥雲，帔帛和雲尾往後飄揚，似從上空飛來之姿。濃眉豐頰，束高髮髻，戴圓形冠，配半月形裝飾，頸佩項圈。腰身纖細，手指、腳趾顯得較為粗長，卻不失其和諧。
此作品以強而有力的墨線直接在粗糙的麻布上描繪，筆勢圓轉，線條遒勁，衣帶飄舉，近似中國唐代（618～907）吳道子佛像畫風中的吳帶當風，故被視為具盛唐（712～756）水墨人物風格。粗細流利的白描，表現出立體感，全幅僅頭髮施以墨彩，並以濕墨描繪雲朵，顯現湧雲的樣子。大膽之筆線，濃淡滲透之墨色，堪稱墨痕淋漓，力透布背。
