Amaravati: Life of the Buddha - Calming the Drunken Elephant

印度安得拉邦阿瑪拉瓦提遺址出土

印度安得拉邦(Andhra Pradesh)阿瑪拉瓦提遺址(Amaravati)出土。原為大塔圍欄上的浮雕裝飾,刻劃佛傳故事中,提婆達多欲藉醉象殺害佛陀,結果醉象卻被佛陀調伏之情節。
 作品採用一圖二景的構圖方式,畫面左下刻劃瘋狂的醉象衝向人群,一人左腳被象鼻卷起,路人驚恐奔逃;右下是被馴服的醉象俯首跪伏在佛陀面前,背景為歡欣的人群與合掌立於佛陀身後的弟子。前者劇烈的動態與後者安詳的局面,構成了鮮明的對比,更增添戲劇性效果。
 整體畫面分遠、中、近景。遠景為上方陽台觀看街景的人們,中景描繪街道上驚恐的人群,近景則是占滿空間、軀體龐大的醉象,層次感相當分明。此時期浮雕已向風格化演變,人體更加修長,動態更加活躍,裝飾華麗。
