此卷約成於十一世紀下半葉。此《妙法蓮華經》共八卷，加上開經《無量義經》一卷與結經《觀普賢經》一卷，合稱為《法華三部經》，內容多以《法華經》為中心，旨在弘揚聲聞、緣覺、菩薩之三乘歸於一佛乘的大乘思想，認為一切眾生皆能成佛。一九五一年指定為日本國寶。
此卷用筆起收井然有度，顯示了書寫態度的誠敬。結體橫扁，橫畫多呈水平狀，具有端莊典麗的氣質，可謂平安時代（794～1185）中期的寫經書法的代表作。該卷裝飾意義濃厚，通卷紙面皆飾以金箔，扉頁並以金泥描繪山水，界格亦以金色描成，可見平安時代寫經裝飾的品味表現。
