此圖表現釋迦牟尼佛在拘尸那揭羅涅槃後，弟子們為佛陀入殮封棺的情景，因其保存狀況良好，屬犍陀羅浮雕珍品之一。
據《大般涅槃經》後分卷上〈遺教品〉載，佛陀咐囑阿難在其入滅後，依轉輪聖王荼毗法行之。涅槃七日後，將遺體放入棺中，並注滿微妙香油；再經七日，以上妙白氈千張遍纏全身，再放入棺中密封；最後以寶車及七寶幢蓋迎至城外，用香油火化。
圖中佛陀的金棺置於木牀座上，棺外飾以蓮花，眾弟子圍繞。左端弟子手扶金棺，右端弟子以手撫頭。金棺後的五位弟子，前排中間舉拂者，為負責入殮程序的優波摩那（佛陀第一位侍者）。每人面容哀戚，帶有不捨之情。牀座前擺放著香爐。作品構圖簡潔，以佛陀的金棺為主體，突顯弟子們微妙的姿態和神情，展現莊嚴肅穆的氣氛。
