阿旃陀石窟第17窟佛陀自忉利天返人間圖
印度馬哈拉施特拉邦奧蘭加巴德
位於阿旃陀石窟（Ajanta Caves）第17窟過廳右壁。據佛經記載，悉達多太子出生七天後，母摩耶夫人亡故，因身為佛母之福報，得生忉利天宮。太子成道後至忉利天宮為母宣講《地藏菩薩本願經》，以報養育之恩，與會者有諸天及菩薩眾。三個月後，天眾以金、銀、琉璃砌成三道寶梯，歡送佛陀返回人間。此圖當為描繪此典故。
畫面分上中下三段，分別描繪佛於忉利天說法、返回人間及在人間說法。每段構圖以佛為中心，兩側繪與會大眾。圖中段可見佛及帝釋天、大梵天二脇侍並立於代表天梯的台階上，左、右側為諸王乘象率軍迎接及天人合掌恭迎場面。圖下段左側繪人間諸王、王妃、長者、商人等盛裝前來聽法，其髮型、服飾多有變化，與右側著樸素袈裟之弟子群像形成強烈對比。
