Joruriji Temple: Hayagriva

馬頭觀音菩薩像

日本明治時代(1868~1912)此像整修時發現胎內銘文,得知係南都(今奈良)善派雕刻師良賢、增金及觀慶三人於鎌倉仁治二年(1241)所雕造。像內並藏有五十九身三面二臂的木造馬頭觀音小像、一身木造雙身毗沙門天王像及木造佛斷片。一九○一年指定為日本重要文化財。
 馬頭觀音為觀世音菩薩之化身,頭頂安置馬頭,現忿怒相,故又稱為馬頭明王。該像高106.3公分,軀幹前後由二材檜木接合而成,三眼四面八臂,身後為鏤空的火焰紋,熊熊烈火似吞噬眾生的無明煩惱。雙目圓睜,眉頭蹙縮,逆髮直豎,張口露出長牙,瘠瘦的身軀強調其精悍之風。正面雙手合掌,其餘手臂分持寶杖、金剛杵,或作伸展、屈臂等手勢,跣足立於多重仰瓣蓮台上。
 該像外表仍保留著當初華麗的色彩及交錯的貼金紋樣。整體造型完好,刻工技法寫實,勁健有力,以拘謹銳利的刀法表現衣紋樣式,顯示鎌倉時代(1185~1333)的造像特色。
