宋代（960～1279）傳世繡品甚少，此圖即其中之一。達摩作胡貌梵相，彎眉圓睛，抿唇，神情沉穩堅毅。身著黃色連帽長袍，內著僧祇支，衣紋及僧祇支以藍線繡製。雙手隱於袖內，足踏蘆葦，立於波濤洶湧的江面，衣襬隨風飄揚，表現達摩一葦渡江的情景。
技法上採齊平針法為主，斜纏針法為輔。絲線繡製人物，另以筆彩繪江水、浪頭和蘆葦，畫繡結合，使整個繡面顯得生動細緻、豐厚飽滿，色彩和諧。圖上方有歷代名士歐大仕及程本中等人之題跋。作品雖無款識，應出自名家之手。
自宋代起，刺繡從單純的實用物品，逐漸發展成藝術欣賞品，尤其繡繪融合的風格，對明代（1368～1644）顧繡起了深遠影響。
