桑奇一號塔佛傳圖之踰城出家

位於東門第二道橫梁正面。刻劃悉達多太子離宮、出家求道的情景。畫面由左向右共分五段,自最左邊的迦毗羅衛城,向最右邊的阿奴摩河(Anoma River)鋪展,均不見太子形象,全圖以象徵的手法,或以白馬犍陟、傘蓋、佛足印來代表悉達多太子的存在。
 據佛傳記載,悉達多太子出離時正值夜深人靜,只有僕人車匿與白馬犍陟相隨,然此畫面第一段的迦毗羅衛城卻呈現人頭湧動,且大多面向城外,似目送太子離城。四天王抬著犍陟出城,緊隨在馬後的男子於城牆上背立回望,應為僕人車匿。
 第二段為太子經過閻浮樹,向圍著欄楯的聖樹作最後的巡禮,此段應出自太子少年時參加釋迦族的耕種節,於閻浮樹下初次入禪定的典故。兩段畫面上方刻劃諸天神或捧花環,或揚巾帛,或敲鑼擊鼓歡慶。
 第三段為太子在眾天人的引導下前進,至阿奴摩河邊。
 第四段為畫面右端上部,太子一行已達目的地,象徵尊貴身分的傘蓋及拂子於此段共出現兩處,一處為犍陟身旁,天王至此不再承托馬足,意喻太子於此下馬;另一處為佛足印之上,車匿則跪於地上禮拜,顯示太子脫下身上瓔珞,正式出離塵世成為修行者。
 第五段位於第四段之下,車匿左手牽韁繩,右手提著裝有太子瓔珞的包袱,踏上歸程,復又回首張望;三位天人伸臂推著犍陟,暗示此馬不願離開。
