摩利支天像

印度

摩利支天為密教的神祇,原是印度教的太陽神蘇利耶,漢譯經典中譯為陽炎或威光。此像三面八臂,立如舞蹈,每面三眼。其三面意喻掌控了三種情愫,正面微笑的善目代表掌控「快樂」,右面醜惡忿怒代表「性」,左面蓮華寶大光明相代表「英雄」。八臂於兩側伸展,二主臂手肘以下已佚,右側手臂分持劍、金剛杵和矢,左側手臂握弓、無憂花和●(Q)索,整體形象與晚期密教經典《佛說大摩里支菩薩經》所記載的摩利支天形象十分相近。其兩腿間與兩腿外側各有一尊豬面女尊像。台座已佚,推測原應雕有七隻小豬。
 印度佛教密宗興起,因與當時興盛的印度教精神合流,吸收了部分印度教元素,特重壇場儀軌、持咒結印、供養禮拜。造像題材也受到印度神像影響,出現了多頭多手、手持法器的菩薩和護法造像,摩利支天即其中之一。
