該圖表現佛陀出家成道後首度於鹿野苑對憍陳如等五比丘說法。台座正面的法輪及二鹿蹲踞，為犍陀羅初轉法輪圖具有標識意義的特徵。
佛陀面容安詳，著通肩袈裟。於樹下結跏趺坐，左手握持袈裟衣角，右手觸台座前的法輪，表示正在說法。佛兩側圍繞五比丘，右側三位、左側二位，比丘均結跏趺坐，依次層疊排列。比丘上方有執金剛神及眾多天人，共聞佛法，歡喜讚歎。
