此浮雕題材事見《佛本行集經》卷四十〈迦葉三兄弟品〉。佛陀於鹿野苑初轉法輪後，便前往優樓頻螺村拜訪婆羅門迦葉三兄弟。三人原係事火外道，分別有徒眾五百、三百、二百，因受佛陀教化，與千名徒眾隨佛出家，為佛教史上教團之開端。
畫面中優樓頻螺迦葉滿臉鬍鬚，頭上結髮髻，身纏腰布，為典型婆羅門修行者的裝扮。迦葉坐於草廬內，見佛陀立於面前，表情又驚又喜，即刻手撐座椅，扶杖，作起身狀。迦葉前面擺置拜火教的火壇。佛陀低頭俯視迦葉，慈祥地張開雙臂，執金剛神緊隨於後。另一位拜火教迦葉的弟子（或是另一位迦葉弟弟），好奇地立於屋後探視。
