Fangguang Temple: Great Hero Hall

方廣寺

湖南衡陽

位於湖南省衡陽市南嶽區衡山蓮花峰下。南朝梁天監二年(503),惠海禪師於此結茅安居。據《一統志》載,有五位自稱龍神的壯士向惠海求法,惠海乃為之講經,當晚雷雨大作,翌日山下出現一片寬敞平地,故有「五龍聽經,平沙獻地」之典故。梁中大通六年(534),始建方廣寺,寓佛法「十方廣布」之意。唐代(618~907)名方廣聖壽寺,宋代(960~1279)賜額稱「方廣崇禪寺」。宋徽宗(1100~1125在位)御書「天下名山」匾額。明萬曆二十年(1592)敕賜藏經,寺僧遂建藏經閣藏之。清順治五年(1648)毀於戰火,清(1644~1911)末重修,近代又失修敗壞。一九九五年開始重建工程,陸續恢復寺觀。
 該寺現存山門、大雄寶殿、祖師殿、禪堂及廂房等建築,布局嚴謹。寺旁尚有惠海禪師補衲台、洗衲池等遺蹟,以及宋、明(1368~1644)歷代題詠石刻多方。
