傳日本弘法大師空海入唐期間，唐順宗（805在位）所賜予，後祕藏於和歌山龍光院空海住處。製於九世紀。
金質，由子珠、母珠、隔珠及記子等以絡繩串連而成。每粒子珠呈圓珠形，鏤空，周緣穿連細金粒。子珠之間以三顆隔珠分隔，將珠串分為六節，方便計數。
念珠終結部分繫上大粒天珠質母珠，內鑿三個小孔，線由兩端貫通後，再拉至第三孔穿出。母珠一端附加十顆二小串的記子，當拈珠念滿一圈時即撥動一記子，作為計數用。尾端以線帶裝飾。念珠另一端亦繫十顆記子。
