生卒年不詳。南宋（1127～1279）佛畫家。河中（今山西永濟）人，馬興祖之長子，馬遠之伯父，隨父南渡移居錢塘（今浙江杭州）。於紹興年間（1131～1162）任畫院待詔，並受賜金帶。馬氏一家五代，自馬賁到馬興祖、馬世榮、馬遠、馬麟，從北宋（960～1127）到南宋，皆擔任皇室畫院待詔，可謂繪畫名門世家。
其畫工得自家傳，善畫花鳥、山水及人物。人物、山水之畫風於南宋後期大展異采，以馬遠、夏珪為主，筆墨逐趨簡率。其作品設色清雅，用筆短截剛勁，頗具戰掣之勢。樹石以水墨橫掃，不作細皴，格調古樸。傳世作品藥山李翱問答圖，現為日本重要文化財，藏京都南禪寺。
