Bihar: Life of the Buddha

印度比哈爾邦(Bihar)出土。主尊釋迦牟尼佛直立於仰覆蓮台上,四周圍繞佛像,代表八相成道。融合肖像及敘事圖的構圖模式,為波羅王朝(Pala,約8~12世紀)造像特色之一。
 主尊上方為涅槃,往下朝順時針方向,依序描述舍衛城神變、獼猴獻蜜、降伏醉象、佛陀自忉利天返人間、降魔成道及初轉法輪。樹下誕生則安排在主尊蓮台右側,蓮台左側雕有多羅像。此八相並不依照先後時序排列,而是依美學對稱安置圖像,如橫向的臥佛置於上端,兩側各有坐佛兩尊和立佛一尊,樹下誕生與多羅像相對,整體構圖呈左右對稱平衡,強調視覺美感,為該像特點之一。
 主尊臉部以線條強調眼線輪廓,卻喪失柔和之美。雙手由兩枝蓮花支托著,右手施無畏印,左手持袈裟一角。衣服皺褶條紋刻板,反映此時期造作和誇張的手法已開始萌芽。作品高度拋光,十足展現光滑的特質,特別是超薄的袈裟和造像在光線照射下呈現的立體感,效果絕妙。主尊兩側佛像的背光均以聯珠紋構成橢圓形外廓,蓮台邊緣亦飾聯珠紋,蓮瓣瓣尖微翹,講求華麗精工,反映出九世紀成熟的波羅王朝雕刻特色。
