炳靈寺石窟第169窟五佛坐像

甘肅永靖

位於南壁上層西側第23龕。木骨泥塑背屏式淺龕,寬4.9公尺,高1.88公尺,進深0.38公尺,龕內東西向並排泥塑坐佛像五身。背屏中部已毀,中尊佛像的頭部已於一九九○年修復,整鋪造像保存基本完整。
 五佛像分東三佛和西二佛兩組。東三佛身材較小,像高分別為0.96公尺、0.97公尺、0.93公尺,高肉髻,均臉形方圓,長眼高鼻,頸粗短;著通肩紅色袈裟,衣紋自左肩斜下於胸前,陰刻衣紋細密清晰;施禪定印,結跏趺坐,背屏彩繪樸素。西二佛形體略大,像高為1.07和1.08公尺,目光平視,墨線勾勒眉眼和鬍鬚,衣紋輕淺,背屏紋樣華麗。五佛像身形雄健,面容含笑,風格上既有犍陀羅藝術的痕跡,也有秦地造像的新因素。
 此外,龕內東起第一、二尊佛像之間的方框內有「歲在丙申(396)六月十八日」的墨書題記,為佛像的斷代提供了重要的參考依據。五佛是西秦(385~431)遷都枹罕(今甘肅臨夏)之後出現的新題材,與一佛、二佛、三佛構成了西秦造像的多樣性。禪定佛像的大量出現則反映了西秦佛教重禪修的特點。
