位於青海省西寧市湟中縣塔爾寺（sku 'bum）宗喀巴殿，造於十八世紀初。塔爾寺所在地原為藏傳佛教格魯派創始人宗喀巴（tsong kha pa）的誕生地。宗喀巴本名羅桑扎巴（blo bzang grags pa），青年時入藏學佛，傳徒授法。其大力提倡戒律，改革佛教，著有《菩提道次第廣論》。為藏傳佛教格魯派祖師，被尊為文殊菩薩的化身。對於宗喀巴造像的供奉自十五世紀以後極為盛行，有單尊像，亦有大師與其弟子的組合像，被稱為宗喀巴師徒三尊。
該像頭戴黃色通人冠，臉龐方圓，面帶微笑，神情莊嚴寧靜。雙手當胸作說法印，同時拈蓮莖，蓮花升於雙肩兩側，花頭分別托代表智慧之經書與能斬煩惱無明之寶劍。身後有六拏具大背光，上嵌寶石，整體造像妙好莊嚴。
