東大寺四天王像

位於戒壇院四隅。該堂中央有一座多寶塔,四隅分別為握劍的持國天、持戟的增長天、右手托多寶塔的多聞天及把筆持卷的廣目天,守護壇場四周。一九五二年指定為日本國寶。
 天王像眼瞳均鑲嵌黑石,容貌表情生動,神態威武,身穿鎧甲,雙肩有獅首裝飾,腿套護脛,腳踩踏大頭小身邪鬼。僅持國天王戴頭盔,其餘三尊皆束髮髻,髮紋分綹齊整。增長天王與持國天王怒目圓睜,氣勢逼人。多聞天王和廣目天王瞇眼,似凝視遠方,形成動靜鮮明對比。天王腳下的邪鬼姿勢各有不同,皆蜷縮蹲伏在地,動彈不得。
 四天王造像手法自然,衣著、盔甲等質感精巧,結構分明,技法獨樹一格。各像部分漆繪、貼金,並塗以帶狀濃淡同色系之彩色,外表尚留存漸層彩色花紋,與該堂執金剛神立像並稱為奈良時代(710~794)塑像之代表。
