Bell with the Five Wisdom Kings

Gilt bronze

Bell with the Five Wisdom Kings

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty

The handle and the body of this Dharma instrument were cast separately and then welded together. The lower section of the handle has a circular band at the center, with lotuses on each side. The upper section is in the form of a pagoda standing on a lotus. A Sanskrit seed syllable is engraved on the pagoda, whose spire consists of stacked rings and a jewel.
The shoulder of the bell is decorated with a ring of lotus petals, while the waist has reliefs of the Five Wisdom Kings. The only Wisdom King that can be identified is Acala. The handle and the pagoda are the result of later repairs.
