CHINA; Qing dynasty

This black lacquered box is square with rounded corners and is inlaid with mother-of-pearl. It is 8.2 cm high and each side is 36.8 cm long. In the center of the lid there is the Chinese character for “double happiness” framed by four clouds. It is surrounded by the eight auspicious symbols: Dharma wheel, parasol, endless knot, conch shell, lotus, vase, two golden fish, and victory banner. The spaces in between the corner symbols and the center are decorated with chrysanthemum patterns. The decoration on the outer edge consists of floral and leaf designs at the corners, and linked key patterns in the center of the straight sides.
