Baiyi Temple Pagoda: Hairpin with Child-Granting Avalokitesvara

CHINA, Gansu, Lanzhou; Ming dynasty

The hairpin was recovered from the heavenly palace of Baiyi Temple Pagoda. It was made toward the end of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644).
The head of the hairpin is made of jade and decorated with gold. There is an image of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva riding on a mythical turtle. The Bodhisattva has an oval face and a compassionate expression. The head is covered with a stole and a robe is worn on the body. The Bodhisattva holds a child while riding a turtle above a lotus pedestal.
