Panel with Sakyamuni Buddha

INDIA

This panel was created in Kashmir and is thought to be part of a reliquary. It is one of three carved ivory panels depicting the Life of the Buddha.
The Buddha wears a five-leaf crown with ribbons hanging down to his shoulders. He wears a necklace and a tight-fitting robe, with hands forming the Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra. The Buddha is flanked by two seated Bodhisattvas. The throne is decorated with lions and a Dharma wheel.
