Crystal and gold

Reliquary Stupa

SRI LANKA; Anuradhapura Kingdom

This reliquary stupa was made in Sri Lanka around the year 200, during the Anuradhapura Kingdom (circa 4th BCE–10th century CE).
The stupa consists of a base and body made of crystal, and a gold spire. The cylindrical base is surmounted by an inverted bowl body. The spire is in the form of a pole, with a round harmika and three gold stacked rings with two rings of small gold balls on the rim, and a further ring at the center. The finial consists of a cluster of miniature gold balls.
