Portable Shrine with Buddha Triad

INDIA

This shrine consists of the Buddha and two attendants, representing the assembly on Vulture Peak. The Buddha sits in full lotus position and performs the dhyana (meditation) mudra. He has a high usnisa, curled hair, joined eyebrows, an urna, half-closed eyes, a narrow nose, and a small mouth. A robe covers both shoulders and falls downwards with tight folds in typical Kashmiri style.
The symmetrical composition has seated ascetics at the top, yaksas in the middle, and kneeling royal figures below. In between the main figures are devotees observing the assembly, and underneath the platform are pairs of antelopes and lions. Attendants stand in tribhanga posture on either side as they turn to look up at the Buddha.
