Embroidery of Manjusri Bodhisattva

CHINA; Qing dynasty

Manjusri Bodhisattva has a high topknot and a crown with ribbons hanging down. There is a double-layer nimbus and five-color mandorla radiating light in all directions. Around the edge of the mandorla are sparkling scrolls of vines and rosettes. A lotus extends from the hands to the shoulders on each side. On top of the lotuses, there is a sword on the left and a sutra on the right. Adorned in a robe, necklace, armlets, and bracelets, Manjusri sits in royal ease on the back of a lion. In the uppermost register, Aksobhya Buddha sits flanked by heavenly beings riding on clouds. On the left of the lowest register, there is a kneeling figure, and on the right, there is a small image of Manjusri Bodhisattva.
