Wood with lacquer and gold

Manuscript Cover

THAILAND

This manuscript cover is one of two used to enclose one of the 19 fascicles of the Padatthayojana. It is believed that it was commissioned by Thai royalty.
The black lacquered wooden manuscript cover with a gilt design measures 58 cm long by 5 cm high. The edges of the cover are decorated with a foliate pattern. The main figures depicted are heavenly beings wearing tall pointed crowns and sitting with joined palms between ceremonial fans. The space between the heavenly beings and the fans is filled with luxuriant leaves.
