Nalanda: Sealing of Nalanda Community

INDIA, Bihar

This circular seal is surrounded by an irregular raised edge. At the apex, there is a worn image of a Dharma wheel with only the hub and wheel rim still visible. Below the wheel are three straight lines which indicate the basic teaching of Buddhism. There is a crouching deer on each side symbolizing the Buddha’s first turning of the wheel at Deer Park after enlightenment. The Sanskrit words in the lower half read “noble community of monks at the great Nalanda Monastery.”
