Trashigang Monastery: Long Horns

BHUTAN, Thimphu

These ritual instruments are made in three sections, fitting one inside the other, making the long horn easily transportable. The diameter of the horn, which has no valve, increases with length toward the lower section. The elaborate decorations are executed in repoussé inlaid with turquoise and coral. The mouth measures 12.9 cm in diameter, and there is a loop near the opening so that a scarf or tassel can be attached.
The long horn is commonly played in Bhutanese monasteries. The lower section is either lifted by hand or placed on the ground during use. The horn is capable of producing a loud and deep sound.
