Phajoding Monastery: Hand Drum

Rosewood

Phajoding Monastery: Hand Drum

BHUTAN, Thimphu

The resonator of this ritual instrument is made from red rosewood while the drum heads consist of goatskin dyed green. The concave section is elegantly decorated with fine carvings of lotuses, scrolling vines, and string beads. The central band is made of metal inlaid with turquoise and has two loops to connect the two pairs of drum head beaters. A ribbon followed by a banner is attached to the band. The banner consists of four layers of cloth joined together by an embroidered lotus blossom. The front and back are embroidered in Lantsa script. One long tassel hangs from the top of the banner, and smaller tassels are attached to each corner of the ends.
