Wat Suwannaram Ordination Hall: King Nimi Jataka (detail)

Wat Suwannaram Ordination Hall: King Nimi Jataka

THAILAND, Bangkok; Bangkok period

This mural by Khru Thongyu, a renowned artist during the rule of King Rama III (reigned 1824–1851), illustrates Pali Jataka No. 541, on the story of King Nimi who upheld the precepts, practiced generosity, and took care of his subjects. Because of his noble behavior, he was invited to Trayastrimsa Heaven by Sakra. After he returned to the human world, King Nimi told his people of the wonders he had seen, assured them that they too could experience the heavenly realm if they practiced virtue, and then abdicated the throne to diligently cultivate the Dharma as an ascetic.
In the mural, King Nimi is shown conversing with Brahma and Sakra in a heavenly palace. The king sits in lotus position on a tiered pedestal, wearing a tall golden crown and ornaments. The Four-Headed, Four-Armed Brahma is on the right with joined palms and looks towards the king, while the green Sakra kneels below on the left. More heavenly beings kneel on either side of an altar in the courtyard. Golden trees and scenes from the story are painted outside the walls.
The figures and the trees are symmetrically arranged around and within the beautifully detailed palace. Bright gold highlights give the mural a dazzling appearance. In most 19th century Thai murals, jagged bands are used to separate the scenes. Here, curving lines are used as a border, making the palace seem as if it is floating upon clouds in the sky.
