Samneung Valley Rock Carvings: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gyeongju; Goryeo dynasty

The Samneung Valley has the largest collection of Buddhist images sculpted during the Silla dynasty (57 BCE–935), resembling a Buddha Land. Incised on a 10 m high vertical cliff facing west, this sculpture was listed as Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 159.
The Buddha sits on a large lotus divided by a horizontal fissure. The facial features and large circular aureole are typical of the Goryeo style, which is very different from that of the Silla dynasty. While the head is prominent, the lower half of the image is not clear.
