Heungyangri: Seated Buddha - Inscription

Heungyangri: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, Gangwon, Wonju; Goryeo dynasty

An accompanying inscription at the base of the rock dates the sculpture from 1090. It is listed as Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 117.
The Buddha sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne. His head is surrounded by a concave circular nimbus carved in relief, which intersects with the incised aureole below. Both are without pattern and the figure stands out from them in deeper relief. The right hand is raised and the left is resting in the lap, appearing to hold a bowl. The folds of the monastic robes are simple and succinct.
