Palgongsan: Medicine Buddha

Palgongsan: Medicine Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, Daegu; Unified Silla dynasty

This rock carving dates from late Silla dynasty (57 BCE–935) and is carved on Palgongsan. It was listed as Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 3.
The Medicine Buddha, 10 m in height, sits meditating in full lotus position on a lotus throne uniquely carved with decorative dragon heads. The right palm of the Buddha faces outward and the left hand cups a medicine jar. The monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare. The folds are simple and rhythmically portrayed. The lotus flower nimbus is rimmed by a vine-like pattern and intersects with a similar aureole below, both of them enclosed in a flame-patterned mandorla.
