Battambang: Oil Lamp

CAMBODIA, Battambang

This oil lamp was made in Battambang, likely around the mid-12th century.
The bronze lamp is in the shape of a slim female figure wearing a crown. The woman has long braided hair, slender eyes, straight nose, and wide mouth. She wears large earrings, a heavy necklace, and armlets. The upper body is bare, and the lower body is covered in a dhoti while she kneels with her palms joined. The bowl for holding the lamp oil stands on the figure’s head and is in the form of four large lotus petals. The lamp is green, which is typical of bronze pieces that have been affected by verdigris.
