Kizil Cave 17: Buddhas Teaching the Dharma

Kizil Cave 17: Buddhas Teaching the Dharma

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

This painting is located on the right wall of the main chamber. The entire wall is divided into upper and lower rows, and each row has four sections with white borders. Many parts of the painting have been damaged. The Buddha image in each section is illustrated wearing a monastic robe that crosses the left shoulder. Some of these images face the left side, while others face the right. Each Buddha has a two-layered nimbus and an aureole around the body. Figures who listen to the Dharma teachings are depicted on either side of the Buddhas.
