Seated Bodhisattva

Seated Bodhisattva

CHINA; Liao to Jin dynasty

This ornate work is of uncertain date but was probably created circa the Liao (907–1125) to Jin (1115–1234) dynasties. The Bodhisattva sits in full lotus position with the right hand forming a mudra. A braid of hair surrounds the figure’s head, and other braids are arranged in a symmetrical topknot tied with a ribbon. Two more braids fall to the shoulders. The eyes are deep set and look downward. The ornamental robe is crossed with a stole, and armbands restrain the sleeves. An ornate bead necklace adorns the Bodhisattva’s chest. Additional stoles lift upwards from the elbows and others appear to encircle the knees.
