Qigxin: Head of a Male Figure

CHINA, Xinjiang, Bayingolin

This fragment of a larger figure depicts the head of a middle-aged man with a tangled beard and mustache. The eyebrows are sharply defined, the large eyes hooded and the nose high but broad. The hair is interwound with cloth and tied into a topknot in the style once favored by the Kushans and illustrates how far elements of the Gandharan style have spread along the trade routes. A fragment of the aureole-like backing found on more complete figures is behind the head.
