Mogao Caves: Mahakasyapa

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Song dynasty

This statue is believed to have originally been located in Mogao Cave 111. Unlike the more common elderly image of Mahakasyapa, this statue depicts a strong-featured man of middle age. The tall, thin body stands upright with joined palms on a lotus pedestal. He looks to one side and his mouth is down-curved. His monastic robe slightly covers his right shoulder and folds deeply over the left arm, then extends in diagonally curving folds to the lower garment beneath. The patches of coloring, which transition to flower patterns on the bottom, add a novel touch.
