Clay
This painted clay statue was originally located within the Kumtura Caves. The Bodhisattva has a round face with a high topknot, fine eyebrows, and almond-shaped eyes. An expression of determination is suggested by the strong features and resolute eyes. A thin mustache complements the small, finely shaped goatee depicted on the chin. A wash of white has been evenly spread over the face, while the eyes and brows are defined by black ink and lips in red, creating a distinct portrait. Although the topknot and tip of the nose are slightly damaged, and some color has faded, the overall exquisiteness of the piece is not lost. Working materials, such as small wood shavings and straw mixed with clay, are visible in the damaged sections.
