Although the Dharma protector has demonic features such as upward protruding fangs and knotted eyebrows, other aspects of the head have a more pleasing appearance. The curled hair and extended earlobes, for example, are signs of a spiritually great person. The work’s most indentifying feature is the lion’s head on top of the head, which reflects Hellenic-influenced models in Gandharan art.
