Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna Buddhas

Gilt bronze

Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna Buddhas

CHINA; Sui dynasty

The two identical figures are supported on joint thrones within a niche with an ogee lintel. This composition is mounted on a rectangular four-legged stand. The robed Buddhas sit cross-legged on cushions and have petal-shaped nimbuses incised with radiating circles. The figures’s hands are in the conventional abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras. A tendril design is incised on the lintel. The statue was commissioned by Zhang Minle in 609 on behalf of her parents according to the inscription found on the stand.
