Screen with the Buddha Teaching the Dharma

This 19th century rectangular wooden screen is lacquered in black and inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The frame and upper register are composed of meticulous interlocking patterns. At the center, there is an image of Sakyamuni Buddha seated in full lotus position with an inscription below. He has a high spiked crown and wears a monastic robe while holding a flaming jewel in his right hand and performing the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra with his left.
The canopy above the Buddha is framed by two vivid nagas, above which there are floral and flame motifs. It culminates in a jeweled spire and finial.
Surrounding the Sumeru throne, there are a number of disciples kneeling and listening intently to the Dharma. Their faces appear serene and joyful, and each wears a monastic robe with palms joined in reverence.
