Java: Vajra Bell

Bronze

Java: Vajra Bell

INDONESIA, Central Java; Central Java period (circa 7th–13th century)

The vajra bell has the functions of reminding and notifying practitioners, purifying temples, and inviting sages.
The top of the bell is in the form of a five-prong vajra, with one straight prong and four curved ones. Between the handle and the body, there are reliefs of three-prong vajras, some of them in openwork. The upper section of the body features lotus petals, while the middle section has some draperies. There are decorations such as vajras, jewels, lotuses, and double vajras on the side of the bell and along with the vajra bell itself, they represent the Five Dhyani Buddhas.
