Pagoda Tier

CHINA; Northern Qi dynasty

The extremely detailed sculpture once formed a tier of a pagoda. An arched door on each side is guarded by a pair of warriors at the bottom and a pair of dragons above the ogee arch lintel. A row of niched, seated Buddhas line the very top. There is central pillar inside the doorway against which a Buddha leans. The head is missing and the nimbus is partly damaged on the pictured side, but the rest of the body is intact. The figure is seated with legs crossed and wears a monastic robe that covers both shoulders.
