Gilt bronze
This small statue is a product of the Dali Kingdom (937–1253) in what is now Yunnan. It was made some time during the 11th to 12th century. The slim figure stands on a lotus pedestal with the right hand held in the vitarka (teaching) mudra. A cross-legged Buddha image is on the tall headdress. The Bodhisattva wears jewelry on the bared torso and arms. The lower body is covered with a long skirt of light fabric molded close to the legs. The skirt is tied with a sash that loops in front, secured with a flower ornament similar to the smaller ornaments mounted on the belt about the waist.
