Seated Buddha

Seated Buddha

CHINA; Ming dynasty

The Buddha sits in full lotus posture on a lotus throne that is positioned on a rectangular platform. The hands are held in the dhyana (meditation) mudra and a monastic robe with widely incised folds covers the left shoulder and is brought around to drape over the other shoulder. The Buddha is enclosed in a mandorla carved with flame patterns around the rim and seven lotuses arching around the figure’s head. The nimbus and aureole are joined together to form a simple shape. An inscription engraved on the platform dates the sculpture to 1591, and declares that the devotee Yin Fu dedicated it for good health and longevity.
