Longmen Grottoes: Heavenly King

CHINA, Henan, Luoyang; Tang dynasty

This Heavenly King has a strong build and the brow is furrowed in an angry frown. The body is slightly inclined to one side. With the left hand placed on the waist, the right hand is held out to the side clasping what may have been a vajra. The king wears armor and a thigh length battle skirt, depicted with concise line incisions. The feet, supported on a damaged pedestal, tramples on a demon.
