Anuradhapura: Standing Buddha

SRI LANKA, North Central Province, Anuradhapura

Most of the statues excavated from this site are seated; this figure is an exception. The Buddha stands upon a double lotus pedestal and has a powerful presence with broad shoulders and a strong chest. The features are still discernible despite the wear of centuries. There are signs the eyes were once inlaid with gemstones. The folds of the monastic robe drape diagonally across the body, leaving the right shoulder bare. Both hands are missing but were obviously raised and the right may have been in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra. The fold of the robe over the left arm is particularly deep.
